Hey! i really liked your final composition! i read your blog, all the steps you have gone through and it really helped me out with some major doubts that i had. thank you for all the stuff that you dispose here, and your tutorial is really helpful.
I’m trying to do a similiar project for my final univ year, because its something that i always enjoyed and i really want to learn the techniqs. its being very painful though, teachers don’t quite understand what i want, so they aren’t being very useful. I’m learning almost all by myself, teaching myself (in this area its not something new right?) with lots of tuts. we learned XSI, so i hope i can do this with this software, else i’ll install maya. i’ve never worked with fusion, always with after effects, but i read all over the internet that shake and fusion are better for this kinds of compositions, so i’ll have to learn it.
so, i was nice to see your flow of work and i’ll try to do something similar.
onde again thanks for your blog! good luck out there!

    Hey!
Glad you liked it :) I wasn’t really happy with the mattepainting itself, had some problems during the process, I think the color palette is wrong, and some of the textures should be better. But im happy with how I solved the technical aspect of 2.5D projection and the post production went well, these two areas was a big challenge to overcome when I started. So overall im happy with the result, keeping in mind that its the first Mattepainting 2.5D I ever did :)

I’m pretty sure you can do the same in XSI, but I don’t know any good tutorials. The next time I do a similar project I will look at using more advanced projection techniques, look at possibilities of adding a second projection camera, and maybe experiment with more advanced geometry to render a z-depth pass. Z-depth works best for cityscapes I believe, where there is allot of details into the horizon.

I had the same problem with no mentors, I regret I didn’t try to get someone with this kind of experience to help me during the process, I was pretty much on my own regarding the technical and artistic parts, got allot of good help from my classmates though.

Ive only used Fusion for post production, but I’m pretty sure After Effects can do the same thing. From what Ive heard Fusion and Shake is more industry standard, so it good to learn anyways.

Good luck with your project :)
