Week 17: Mattepainting and projection

This week I have continued on the mattepainting and started the projection work in Maya. The clip with the filmed greenscreen material is edited, and the camera has been exported from Boujou to Maya. I’m exactly on schedule according to my timeplan, but because delivery is in week 12 and not week 13 as I first thought, I have one week less on post production. I’ve allready come far with the camera projection, everything is going smooth so far.

When I have set up the correct camera move, I need to render out the animated waterwheel, waterfall mesh with animated UV and the houses. All the models and animations are done, I only need to place them correctly, tweak the lighting and render them to a separate layer. I will post updates on these next week.

This is pretty much what the final piece will look like. When I have set up the projection I will go back into Photoshop and clone in the details revealed behind each layer, I will also fix the castle since I’m not happy with how it looks. I will create more depth on the mountains, adjust contrast and color correct in Fusion when I do post production.

Week 16: Mattepainting

Been working on the Mattepainting this week. I did a complete makeover because I wasn’t happy with the old version, I also changed the color scheme to a more fantasy sunset one. I placed the houses on the right side and closer to the camera to create more depth. I will work more on color corrections and textures a few more days, then start with the 2.5D projection and post production.

Week 14 & 15: Mattepainting

The last 2 weeks I have been working with the mattepainting. Im pretty much done with the left foreground elements. For the other background elements like the mountains alot of work is required. Im still tweaking the scale of the shot also.

Other than this Ive been looking for ways of doing a simple waterfall with animated UV, and how to do a flock of birds in after effects.

Week 13: Modeling, UV mapping and texturing

I’m done with the castle, watermill and city 3D work for now. I will tweak the renders and textures later on when I composite them into the final piece, to make sure the colors and light are correct and they blend in. The city and castle will be added to a layer in Photoshop as paintover, this should work well since they are very far back in the scene with minor parallax. If it turns out to look wrong, I can always render with the Maya move_camera and composite it in Fusion later.

Im still not sure what to do with the watermill. For it to have a function It needs water, I will do some tests with animated UV combinet with particles next week. I will also start with the mattepainting production.

Here are my renders:

City
I randomly placed different versions of the houses around a mountain like structure. I did this for a test render. The objects will be composed in a different way in the final version. I need to paint the mountain structure before I know how to place them.

Week 12: Filming, 3D modeling & previz

This week we have filmed the greenscreen material, we ended up with 5-6 different compositions. I have done the model for the castle and watermill in my scene.

Models
This is my polygon castle:

Here is the watermill, all 3 wheels are animated:

Previz
This is my previz. In the foreground I have roughly keyed the greenscreen material. The watermill is animated and some white geometry in the background illustrates where the flock of birds will fly toward the sky.
