Week 1 report

The first week we knew that we should make a game for the multi touch screen since we had talked to Johannes and Arash before the course began and we got the opportunity to work with a different project then the rest of the class.

We met the day when we had the introduction to the course and went through our ideas that we had to see what we should do for game and we discussed through some ideas and we decided to go for one concept that both of us had but in different forms. Krus idea was about paintballs that you should shoot between players and catch by doing some signs on the screen and then throw in some other direction and the one who didn’t catch the ball would loose the game (correct me if I’m wrong Krus). My idea was about a black hole that would shoot out things and you as a player had to dodge them in some way or protect your self from them.

We thought it was something cool and met up with Johannes and some other guy at the nui office to discuss what we should do and some practical stuff. We were also told that we should get a couple of game developers from the third grade to make our game but they didn’t know who at that time.

We got to meet our programmers the day after but they hadn’t decided who was going to work on our game and who was going to work on a different project but we meet them and I presented our idea with a picture I made the previous day which explains the game and the concept. They liked the idea I think and we discussed some that day about the project and what could be done and how it could work.

The week went on and we started to write our design document, we used the base from the book Game Design Workshop (ISBN: 1-57820-222-1) and took what was needed for us and our project. We started to write down what we had to be done in time.

We decided to have two kinds of weapons and three types of walls from the beginning, the weapons should be lasers and missiles and the three types of walls became concrete, mirror and tractor beam walls. Concrete walls were the hard all round type of wall, it could take damage from both lasers and missiles and take quite some damage. The mirror walls should be able to reflect lasers but be crushed by missiles and the opposite would go for the tractor beam walls.

That was pretty much the first week, discussing and writing on the design document.
