Log: Explosion Test

Exp.JPG

Ive done som test with blobmaps and particle explosions whitch might come in handy when we’ll be working on the motorcycle crash (for e.g we can instance engine parts to a smaller explosion and connect it to a gravity field in the same direction as the bike goes).

This is not a final render, im still refining bits n pieces.

    This looks promising.

Keep in mind that FX work (fire, smoke, etc) can add considerable time to your project when completed to a professional level. Make sure you allow for this in your plans.

I’d encourage you all to keep the volume of work that you want to achieve for the film quite small, and sink your efforts into making it look as good as you can possibly make it look.It is easy to take it to 80% completion, but it takes a *lot* of time to refine it to 100%.

Whatever you do, don’t sacrifice image quality for volume. I know that your aim is to produce the best possible images and that is great.

Focusing on image quality will help to make your work really stand out from the pack.

We get a lot of showreels of short films where they are too focused on getting the whole story of the film rendered in time, and they drop the quality of the output in order to do this.

This would never happen in the industry, as the studio would either knock the film back and not pay for it, or the company would go bust as nobody would work with them again. Image quality is paramount.

Anyway, that’s the main point I want you to think about from the very start.

    Cheers,

    Hi Dayne.
I agree, I wish particles and volumetrics were a piece of cake, so hopefully i wont go crazy on this one. =)

On of the challanges in this project will be to create a good looking rocket-launch with the smoke and all, I figure I might do some after hours volumetrics-tests - but the main focus for me will always be the vechicles.

Actually, I encountered a problem with this particle, maybe you recognize it:
I tried to batch-render out a sequence of the effect on my home computer, but the render ends after about 20 frames and I get the standard “check maya render log.. ” in the output.
Thought about caching the particle, so that I wont get different results each time - but I cant figure out what is causing the batch to stop rendering.

    thank you for the response!
    /mike

    Hi there,

Don’t let my comments put you off exploring the FX work.. it’s an important part of the piece!

I guess what I was really getting at was the need to be cautious about the scope of the whole project that you guys are hoping to do. Even for a good size team, it is a big challenge.

Unfortunately I can’t really help you with technical/render error problems, as it is too tricky for me to diagnose from here. You will have to check with your tutors.

    Hi guys,

How is the effects side of the project going? Just curious..
